My given name is Shannon; my taken name is Sam. I live in Portland, Oregon. Creating is my passion.

My background in graphic design plays a prominent role in my painting today. I have a fascination with typography, symbols of communication, numbers, and gain inspiration from accounting ledgers, maps, vintage papers, road signs, conceptual design, textile patterns, Egyptian history and African wildlife… 

I often experiment and combine different materials for unexpected, imperfect results: stitched paper, acrylics, vintage papers, used sandpaper, found objects, tea bags… and I use a variety of tools: computer, typewriter, sewing machine, sandpaper, fingertips…

With this combination of tools and materials I strive to create textures  mimicking an aged, well-lived, well-loved ground.

In addition to my artwork, I enjoy double dutch jump-roping, listening to dialect recordings, and stitching gum wrapper curtains.
